Electrician quotation template

Electrical quoting has a particular risk: most of the system is hidden. You are pricing work on a circuit you cannot fully inspect until you open it up, and what you find can change the job entirely.

This template prices the visible work clearly and handles the hidden part properly rather than by hoping.

How to structure the price

Quote by identifiable unit rather than by hours, because customers can compare units and cannot judge hours:

  • Per point — socket, switch, light point, data point.
  • Per circuit — new circuit from the board, including protective device.
  • Fittings — supplied by you, or customer-supplied and stated as such.
  • Distribution board work — replacement, additional ways, RCD upgrade.
  • Testing and certification as its own line.

Certification is not optional and not free

Testing and issuing the certificate is chargeable work with real time attached, and it is the line most often left off quotes competing on price.

Price it explicitly. A customer comparing your quote against one that omitted certification is not comparing like with like, and saying so in a line item is more persuasive than saying it in conversation.

The exclusions that protect you

  • Existing wiring found to be defective — the single most important exclusion in electrical work.
  • Chasing, plastering and making good to walls and ceilings.
  • Redecoration after making good.
  • Lifting and relaying fixed floor coverings.
  • Upgrades required by regulation that become apparent once work begins — bonding, earthing, board compliance.
  • Supply upgrades requiring the distribution network operator.

State that any of these, if found, will be reported and quoted separately before proceeding. That converts a potential dispute into a normal variation.

Access, isolation and timing

Set out practical assumptions: that power can be isolated for the periods required, that the areas will be clear, and that access is available during normal hours.

Where the customer needs work done out of hours — a shop, an office, a tenanted property — price that separately rather than absorbing it. Out-of-hours working is a real cost and one customers accept when it is stated up front.

Frequently asked questions

What should an electrician's quotation include?

Pricing per point and per circuit, fittings with who supplies them, distribution board work, testing and certification as its own line, exclusions, access assumptions and lead time.

Should certification be quoted separately?

Yes. It is chargeable work with real time attached, and it is the line most often omitted by quotes competing on price. Showing it makes your quote comparable.

What is the most important exclusion in an electrical quote?

Existing wiring found to be defective. What is behind the walls cannot be priced until it is opened up, so state that such findings will be reported and quoted separately.

Should I price per point or by the hour?

Per point or per circuit. Customers can compare units between suppliers and cannot judge hours, so unit pricing both converts better and is easier to defend.

How do I handle work needed outside normal hours?

Price it separately and say so up front. Customers with shops, offices or tenanted properties generally accept an out-of-hours rate when it is stated at quotation stage.
